SEO professionals often look for new SEO hacks to use. SEO hacks are often helpful in getting the job done. It can ease the burden if you are lazy. It can also make a lot of redundant work a lot more efficient. However, some hacks are just bad hacks. Take for instance this strategy shared on Twitter: 01
“As we are heading towards 2019, all Title tags on 31 dec will be changed to How to Rank in 2019 or To 100000 ways to Rank in 2019. #SEO hank” – Anil Thakur (@anilthakur2u) In Anil’s defence, I think he’s just joking. I mean, I do hope he’s just joking because that’s a bad SEO hack. I don’t really see the point in doing it. It’s too much of a hassle and it seems like a waste of time. Users will be utterly disappointed once they found out you just changed the title tag and didn’t add anything (like an update) to the content. Even if it’s a joke, it’s not really that funny. Anyway, joke or not, Google’s John Mueller tweeted the following in reply: 01
THERE ARE MORE PRODUCTIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO “As a user, recognizing that old content is just being relabeled as new completely kills any authority that I thought the author/site had. Good content is not lazy content. SEO hacks don’t make a site great. Give your content and users the respect they deserve.” – John Mueller (@JohnMu) According to Search Engine Round Table, John further added “Maintaining and updating (or even deleting, when needed) content to make sure it’s not out of date is awesome. It doesn’t guarantee ranking well, but not maintaining it at all is much worse”. On a serious note, there are more productive things you can do to your content than relabeling old ones from 2018. I’m not saying you can’t or shouldn’t relabel old content. You can do that of course, as long as there’s a need to. If there are meaningful changes to the old content, you can change the title to reflect that. But if you just relabel the old content without doing anything else, that’s a bad idea. If you have the time to relabel old content, you definitely have the time to conduct a content audit. Maybe relabeling the title tags of old content can cause a penalty in the future. Anyway, the best SEO hack I can give for now is this: create high-quality content. 05
