How Search Engine Works: SEO Basics
If you are in the SEO industry, there are some basic things you need to know. Whether you are old or new, understanding what a search engine is and how it works is a must. This will be the foundation for your SEO strategy.
What is a search engine? According to Investopedia, a search engine is a “software designed to search the Internet for websites to add to an index”. It is a program that crawls, indexes, and retrieves content from the internet to answer a user’s query.
How do search engines work? Search engines work by performing its major functions to provide users with a ranked list of relevant results for their query. Search engines have three primary functions: crawling and indexing, retrieving, and ranking.
What is crawling? Crawling is the process by which search engines discover new and updated content on the web. Search engines use a program, often referred to as crawler, bot, or spider, that follows a search algorithm to sort through web pages in the Search index.
What is indexing? The “Index” is the place where data is stored and organised. Indexing is the process of sorting and filing the crawled content in a data centre that acts as a repository of the copies of web pages.
What is retrieving? After indexing the content, search engines are ready to retrieve the data in response to a query. Search engines use an algorithm to process the crawled data from the Index to provide users results in response to their question. This process is called retrieving.
What is ranking? The search engine will then rank the results that answer the user’s search query. The most common process goes from indexing to ranking but it doesn’t have to be indexed to be ranked. Search engines use an algorithm to decide how the pages rank in their search engine results page. If a link points a page, search engines can follow that link if it can gather valuable information.
What is search engine optimisation? According to Techopedia, search engine optimisation or SEO refers to “methods used to increase traffic to a website by increasing its search engine page rank”. There are two significant factors that determine a page’s relevance: on-page optimisation and off-page optimisation.
