Just like other things, Search Engine Optimisation has gone through several changes. It’s difficult to think of a company that hasn’t changed over the years. Rules and ethics keep improving every year and need rewriting. It may not be easy to keep up with this, but Google prefers it that way. And if you may have ranking targets and results you want to achieve this year, you need to reconsider the factors because what gave you positive results last year may not work out the same this year.

SEOTACTICS: RANKINGIN 2018 SEO
Just like other things, Search Engine Optimisation has gone through several changes. It’s difficult to think of a company that hasn’t changed over the years. Rules and ethics keep improving every year and need rewriting. It may not be easy to keep up with this, but Google prefers it that way. And if you may have ranking targets and results you want to achieve this year, you need to reconsider the factors because what gave you positive results last year may not work out the same this year. Quick recall! In June, we talked about the basics of Search Engine Optimisation. Here, I pointed out the basics of how SEO works and components such as search engine, crawling, indexing, retrieving and ranking. So, ranking refers to an algorithm that search engines use to determine how your website can be seen in a search results page depending on a user’s query. This time, we’re going to look at what factors to consider, following the changes with SEO in 2018.
What’s in store for SEO in 2018? As Google enhanced its technology and its next algorithm, the list of factors we have to consider regarding SEO ranking also changes. Some became irrelevant, but these key Google ranking factors still matter today because they apply to every site; Content, Backlinks, Mobile, and Social Media. Content is not something that we consider as new. It has always been a significant factor in SEO ranking. However, because the internet has become a circus of many details, content is no longer given a more profound thought. Google is not evaluating any more using individual keywords. Google’s AI system RankBrain has now placed a value towards relevance and optimisation, including images, embedded videos and infographics. Videos represent 80% of online traffics according to Cisco, so including videos to your content adds value. But you have to make sure that you keep your content relevant, in a way that it doesn’t look too robotic that humans can still appreciate. You can make use of tools or auditing software if you need help with optimisation.
Aside from content, backlinks are still considered an important ranking factor. Links need to be diverse especially if they are from an authoritative domain. If your content is well-written, it would be useful and better if the link you generate is also relevant. These links send Google a signal, so keep in mind that your content is of good quality and promote it well with a refined link. Mobile is a technical factor that can affect your website’s rankings. These include the amount of time a person spends on your page, as well as repeat visits. Google recently focused its attention specifically with mobile search speed. Web content owners and creators may be penalised now for sites that don’t load quickly on mobile devices. So we now have to be more mindful of mobile page speed. When people share your content on social media, Google deems it as something valuable. There’s a thin line between search engine ranking and social shares, and although Google continues to maintain the fact that social media sharing is not a definite factor in SEO ranking, it doesn’t steer away from the fact that the highest ranking pages have a lot of social media shares.
With all these factors to be more considered, don’t forget that the bottom line is you should maintain rich contents and useful, quality links. While other factors may be necessary, focusing on these foundations will always be the key elements to improve your website. You don’t have to fix these every single time, or you mind end up having too much on your sleeve.
