Underground Storage Tanks • Hazards: toxic vapors, explosion, open excavation, confined space, heavy equipment • Restrictions: Do not enter the work zone • Responsibilities: Check contractor qualifications, facilitate HazMat sampling
Contaminated Media • Hazards: toxic chemicals, open excavations, heavy equipment • Restrictions: Do not touch, do not enter the work zone • Responsibilities: check contractor qualifications, coordinate with Region HazMat for sampling
Institute for Research in Construction, National Research Council of Canada Hong Kong Water Supplies Department Asbestos R. Grieshaber, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Dept. Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management
Asbestos • Hazards: Inhalation of asbestos fibers • Restrictions: Do not enter containment/work area • Responsibilities: Ensure documentation is completed R. Grieshaber, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Dept. Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management
Lead-Based Paint • Hazards: Lead, dust, blasting • Restrictions: Need same qualifications as contractor to enter containment • Responsibilities: enforce PCP, check containment and spill response
Painting • Hazards: toxic vapors • Restrictions: Need same qualifications as contractor to enter containment • Responsibilities: enforce PCP, check containment and spill response
Fuel • Hazards: toxic vapors, explosion, fire • Restrictions: Do not touch contractor fuels • Responsibilities: enforce Pollution Control Plan (PCP) and Spill Prevention, Control & Countermeasures (SPCC) plan, check containment and spill kits
Hazardous Construction Materials • Hazards: Paint, solvents, spray cans, oils, pesticides/herbicides, etc. • Restrictions: Do not touch • Responsibilities: enforce PCP, check containment and spill kits
Other Demolition Wastes • Treated timbers • Mercury vapor lamps • PCB transformers • Striping grindings • Painted concrete
Spills • Hazards: toxic vapors, dust, heavy equipment • Restrictions: Do not touch spill or enter spill area • Responsibilities: call Region Dispatch and HazMat ASAP, ensure contractor cleans up and have HazMat Coordinator approve cleanup
Abandoned Hazardous Materials • Labeled sealed containers • Unidentifiable containers • Drug lab wastes
Abandoned Hazardous Materials • Hazards: Toxic, explosive • Restrictions:DO NOT TOUCH, stay away • Responsibilities: call Region HazMat and Dispatch ASAP
