This course explores the structure and usage of American Sign Language (ASL), including phonology, morphology, and syntax. It also examines the study of language and social structure, known as socio-linguistics, and the concept of communicative competence. Students will learn how to use language appropriately in various situations and understand the different ways of saying the same thing, known as language variation. Regional vocabulary variations, pronunciation differences, and social variation will also be covered.
