Why do we need the WIS? • Why do we need any Data Communication Networks? • To move data and products? • To feed processing systems? • To tell someone something? • To Improve life! By satisfying societies needs. Hold that thought -
WIS Data Communication Network Needs • Full functionality for current requirements • Relative ease to expand functionality • Extensible virtualization • Transition to new technology • Network centric systems to provide interconnectivity • Highly scaleable architecture • Routine technology refresh
WIS Data Communication Network Needs • IP-based networking solutions provide: • Any-to-any connectivity • High degree of bandwidth scalability • Optimum redundancy and survivability • IP convergence (i.e., voice, video and data over IP) • High-end performance • Network security remains paramount, particularly in light of today’s socio-political threats • Segmentation from the public Internet • Minimizes risk of security or privacy breaches

US GISC / VGISC • US WIS development planning & implementation underway • Major infrastructure upgrades in process & need to be completed. • Replacement Message Switching System • File switching capability built into new systems • Geographically separated , fully functional back up system • Data synchronization via database snapshoting using Db change logs. • Nationwide MPLS cloud • All connectivity will transition to direct connect or a gateway connection • Transition of connections underway • WMC / RTH Washington will provide WIS GISC functionality within its systems. • Will have virtual extension to other centers adding to GISC functionality • Will coordinate within Region IV to develop regional plan
