Welcome to Waid Academy LibraryMy name is Mrs. Bogleand I am the School Librarian
The library is open everyday from 8.30am until 4.30pm. At break & lunch time the library is restricted for use by the Learning Support Department
The Library has lots of books! They are arranged in a special way, to make it easier for you to find a particular book that you maybe looking for. First of all, they are divided into two main sections: Fiction& Non-Fiction
Fiction • These are made up stories about imaginary people and events. • These stories are not true. For example: Harry Potter’sadventures
How Fiction books are arranged • Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order using the Author’s SURNAME. • This allows all the books by the same author to be kept together on the shelf
Know your Alphabet? • For example: Jacqueline Wilson books will be shelved under W because her surname is Wilson and begins with the letter W. • How would you arrange the following authors on the shelf: Robert Westall, James Watson, Chris Wooding & Jacqueline Wilson?
Solution !Did you get it right? • Watson, James • Westall, Robert • Wilson, Jacqueline • Wooding, Chris
Non- Fiction These are information books They contain information about all kind of subjects, for example: • events that have happened • how to do things • how things work
How Non-fiction books are arranged • Non-fiction books are arranged by SUBJECT • This makes it easier for you to find books for any topic that you are studying - for example all books on cars are found together.
Dewey Decimal Classification System • Each non-fiction book is given a code-number & the books are arranged on the shelf in NUMERICAL order • All books on the same subject are given the same number • This arrangement is known as the Dewey Decimal Classification System – named after Melvil Dewey who devised the system
Information is divided into 10 main sections • 000 – 099 General Knowledge & Computing • 100 – 199 Philosophy & Moral Issues • 200 – 299 Religion • 300 – 399 Community Social Sciences • 400 – 499 Languages • 500 – 599 Sciences • 600 – 699 Technology • 700 – 799 Art, Music & Sport • 800 – 899 Literature • 900 – 999 History & Geography
Don’t worry about all these numbers! • Waid Library is quite a small library, and all the shelves are labelled to help you find the book you want!
Here is an example • The Dewey number for Sport is 796 – so all books on sport are found together on the shelf with this code number on their cover • As there are lots of different Sports, the number changes slightly for each one: • Basketball 796.323 • Rugby 796.333 • Tennis 796.342 • Golf 796.352
Other Resources The Library is not just a place to borrow books you will also be able to use the other information resources, such as: • The Internet • Reference Library • Newspapers • Audio books • Careers Information

Normally, a book will be stamped with a date, allowing the reader to keep it for 2 weeks – but if you need more time to read it, it can be stamped for another 2 weeks If you can’t find the information that you need, please ask the Librarian to help
