  2. Political Party • A group of persons who seek to control government through the winning of elections and the holding of public office.

  3. Interest Groups • Private organizations whose members share certain views and work to shape public policy. • Examples include: -PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) -NRA (National Rifle Association) -NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) -Amnesty International (Working to Protect Human Rights)

  4. Mass Media • Those means of communication that reach large audiences, especially television, radio, printed publications, and the Internet.

  5. Electoral Process • The process by which eligible voters select the men and women who they want to represent them at all levels of government-local, county, state and national.

  6. Two-Party System • A political system dominated by two major political parties.

  7. Third Parties • The term used in the United States for any and all parties not affiliated with the two major political parties-Democrats and Republicans.

  8. Gerrymandering • The drawing of electoral district lines to the advantage of a party or group.

  9. Presidential System • A form of government in which the executive and legislative branches of the government are separate, independent, and coequal.

  10. Campaign Finance • All funds that are raised and spent in order to promote candidates, parties, or policies in some sort of electoral contest.

  11. Domestic and Foreign Policy • Domestic policy is the area of public policy concerning laws, government programs and administrative decisions all directly relating to issues and activities within a nation’s borders. • Foreign policy is the way that a government advances its interests in global politics.

  12. Public Policy • All of the goals a government sets and the various courses of action it pursues as it attempts to realize these goals.

  13. Public Opinion Polls • Devices that collect information through questioning.

  14. Federal System/Federalism • A form of government in which powers are divided between a central government and several local governments.
