  3. Importance of being heart healthy • Prevents heart and vascular diseases, the number 1 killer in the US. • Improve quality/healthy years of life.

  4. What you can do • Make Lifestyle changes for long term health to include a healthy diet and regular exercise. • Receive annual physicals • Manage your risk factors

  5. Blood Pressure • The amount of pressure your blood exerts on your blood vessels. • 120/80 & below - normal • 121-130/81-89 - pre-hypertensive • 140/90 & above - hypertension

  6. Cholesterol

  7. Diabetes • Type 1 diabetes • Type 2 diabetes • Normal 100 and below • Pre-diabetic 100-126 • Diabetic 126 and above, diagnosis

  8. Smokingand Stress • Smoking and chronic stress can increases your risk cardiovascular disease. • Find ways to help you quit smoking. • Find an effective coping strategy.

  9. Diet and Exercise • Physical inactivity and poor diet are linked to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other diseases. • Weight not as important as healthy behaviors. • Begin a regimen today!

Summary • To improve your heart health and decrease your risk for cardiovascular disease you should: • Begin a lifestyle of healthy diet and regular exercise. • Know and understand your risk factors and take measures against. • Know your numbers! Get tested for high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. • Talk to a health professional if you have questions or not sure how you can get started.

  11. Activity • What is one thing you can add to your routine that will help your heart health? Example, eat less sodium. • Did you know….preventative medicine is covered in the County’s health plan. That includes all screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes!
