  9. Two reactors produce heat that turns water into steam. Steam turns turbines that generate electricity. Water from the Chesapeake is used to cool the system.

  10. There are currently 104 licensed to operate nuclear power plants in the United States, which generate about 20% of our nation's electrical use. Maryland currently has one nuclear power plant producing about 31% of our electricity.

Safe and Secure Nuclear Regulatory Commission • The NRC requires that nuclear power plants be both safe and secure. • Safety refers to operating the plant in a manner that protects the public and the environment. • Security refers to protecting the plant—using people, equipment and fortifications—from intruders who wish to damage or destroy it in order to harm people and the environment.
