18. Not to worry… Undecided students : Later this fall, you’ll be assigned academic advisors according to your interests
Encouraged to take courses from many disciplines and different colleges
Allowed to be “undecided” TWO years
As likely to graduate in 4 years as those who declare a major initially
19. HOW TO ACE COLLEGE
20. Dr. Richard Light, Harvard Prof, writes in his book, Making the Most of College
You should:
get to know at least 1-2 faculty each term
(for advice, support, and providing references )
Manage time in blocks —”plan” your hours for study
Get involved in variety of extracurricular activities
Take a mix of courses-- and don’t devote first years solely to requirements.*
(* Light also says “parents are well meaning but give ‘lousy’ advice” on
point 4,--they’re “especially bad at picking courses!” ? )
21. ** “Make it happen: If it’s not on your calendar, it’ll never happen.” Phil Keoghan
It’s ALL about time management!!
Reserve or block 2 hours of study for every credit hour. 16 credits X 2 = 30+ hrs (!!) of scheduled
study time every week
Utilize your ‘blocked‘ daytime hours for study– go to the library regularly or to a quiet study area, not to your room!!
** Things which matter most should never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” Goethe
