Humanist Psychology • Humanist do not believe that human being are pushed and pulled by mechanical forces, either of stimuli and reinforcements (behaviorism) or of unconscious instinctual impulses (psychoanalysis). • Humanists focus upon potentials.
Humanists continued • They believe that humans strive for an upper level of capabilities. • Humans seek the frontiers of creativity, the highest reaches of consciousness and wisdom.
Maslow Said: • All human behavior is motivated by a desire to satisfy needs. • In order for a person to keep striving towards the ultimate in his/her growth there has to be a feeling of accomplishment

Safety: the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury. • Security: the state of feeling safe, stable, and free from fear or anxiety.

Love and Belonging Love and Belonging • Affection • Acceptance • Inclusion • Friendship • Intimacy
Love and Belonging • Having a sense of love and belonging allows us to give and receive affection from another person
This is the third level of the hierarchy. Remember once all or most of a person’s physiological and safety needs have been met, one can move on to LOVE and BELONGING.

Basic needs • Physiological/physical, safety and security, love and belonging, esteem are all BASIC needs • Maslow says these needs motivate people if they are unmet • The longer they go unmet, the more intense the desire to meet the need becomes • Ex. Hunger becomes more intense if food need not met
Self-Actualization • Achieve full potential • Fulfillment • Seeking personal growth • Have peak experiences
Self-Actualization • Closely related with self-esteem. • Maslow said that only 1 in 100 people will become self-actualized • Cannot be obtained unless all other areas are mastered first. • Living up to your full potential • This will look different for each person

Growth needs • Involve the desire to grow as an individual and fulfill one’s own potential • What could hinder a person not living up to their potential?
