Dutch Imperialism in Indonesia • Late 1700s: Dutch East India Company controlled most of the 3,000 mile long Indonesia island chain • Used islands as plantations (sugar, bananas, rubber, coffee, coconuts, and pineapples) • With the discovery of oil in the region, the Netherlands took control of the islands making them Dutch East Indies colony • Dutch used the direct method of governing the islands British Imperialism in SE Asia Gray • British colonize Malaysia , Burma, N. Borneo & Singapore Dark Green • British needed resources like tin & rubber to finish the Suez canal and needed the port in Singapore
