Generalizations • To effectively summarize, students must delete some information, substitute some information, and keep some information. • Students must analyze the information at a fairly deep level. • Students must be aware of the explicit structure of information.
Recommendations • Rule-based summarizing strategy • Summary Frames • Reciprocal Teaching Strategy
Generalizations • Verbatim note taking is the least effective way of taking notes. • Notes should be considered a work in progress. • Notes should be used as study guides for tests. • The more notes that are taken, the better.
Recommendations • Give students teacher-prepared notes. • Teach students a variety of note-taking formats. • Use combination notes.
Rule-based Summarizing • Take out the material that is not important to understanding. • Take out words that repeat information. • Replace a list of things with one word. (Trees instead of elm, oak, and pine.) • Find or write a topic sentence. If you can’t find a topic sentence, write one.
Combination Notes Format Uses • Outlining • Webbing • Pictographs • Words Monitor Keyboard Mouse CPU The computer has 4 parts. The monitor shows information, the keyboard for typing, the mouse moves the cursor, and the CPU is the computer’s brain.
