What is Direct Modeling? • Direct modeling is the interactive manipulation of B-Reps • Boundary-representation solid models – the same shape representation used by feature modelers • But: • Direct modeling works by dynamically changing any requested modifications to geometry • Redrawing at 30 frames/second – orders of magnitude more model changes undertaken • Provides fast and flexible 3D modeling • CAD-neutral – only dealing with generic geometry providing true interoperability • Dramatic reduction in complexity of creating & dealing with 3D • Can provide a full CAD strategy, but also often adds value to manufacturers’ existing investment in feature-based CAD
