  3. What is Meta Data • "Data about data" • Metadata is used to facilitate the understanding, characteristics, and management usage of data. • Examples: Who collected the data? where was it collected? what's the data all about? • What is meta-data doing for us? • What its not i.e. the actual data

  7. Background • Chose to go with ArcticNet (at Calgary in July) • ArcticNet is a "Web-based metadata system“ • Hosted out of U. Waterloo • Limited to specific generic fields • Doesn't cover off everything • Since Calgary
