As a participating school in the OLSEL pilot program, we at St. Agatha’s have aligned our teaching practice to focus on enhancing the children’s oral language understanding in order to improve their overall literacy results.
New Skills Literacy results have improved since we focussed on • Visualising new words • Listening behaviours • Questioning techniques • Extending sentences • Synonyms and antonyms • Predicting
Observations The following improved behaviours have been noted • Well entrenched listening skills • Improved prediction skills • Improved comprehension • Better use of adjectives • Improved grammar • Broader vocabulary usage • Higher reading levels
Future Plans • Focus on ESL children • Collaborative planning • Sharing of ideas • Better usage and knowledge of OLSEL folder • More focussed Show and Tell • Continue to improve and develop questioning strategies • Encourage children to observe details in pictures and be able to verbalise their observations
