Over the Hillside(Pre-production project background research) Graham CANWELL M.A. Concept Art 2011/2012
What art thou?......................... • A pretentious place to begin this piece of research I accept, but, put as simply as possible, the question of why some of us are compelled to create visual art in response to events in our lives has continued to puzzle and intrigue me , (particularly where no financial motive exists to be creative). Thishas challenged many thinkers and artists before us, from Freud to Tolstoy. • These brief notes and visual references contain a few examples of the “art” which has influenced this project, in service of what has become an autobiographical work, but hopefully a universal and “shared” experience persists.
The film “Stalker” has had the most obvious influence on my work “Stalker’s Dream” from the film “Stalker”, by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky.
OVER THE HILLSIDE(5.03)..........................................................................The Blue Nile • Working night and day, I try to get ahead • But I don’t get ahead this way... • Workin’ night and day, the railroad and the fence • Watch the train go roll round the bend.... • Over the hillside, over the moment, • Over the hills and waiting ...... • Workin’ night and day, I try to get ahead • Workin’ night and day don’t make no sense • Walk me into town, the ferry will be there • To carry us away into the air.... • Over the hillside...over white water • Over the hills and falling .........................................(trumpet solo) • Stars in your eyes, knowing what’s right.... • Stars in your eyes don’t explain • Over the hillside, Over the hillside... • Over the hills and waiting ................ • Over the hillside, over the hillside • Over the hills and home we’ll go • Tomorrow I will be there, Tomorrow I will be there, Tomorrow I will be there • Tomorrow I will be there.....Oh you wait and see... • (Coda) • I can’t go on and I can’t go back • I don’t feel so matter of fact... • I tried and tried to make good sense • What’s the good to try it all again..... • Paul Buchanan...................................................................Buchanan Music/Linn Records c.1989
Other influences................................... • The visual and written inspirations for this project are much greater than those listed here but this small sample contains some key sources. ANSELM KEIFER
