Stage 1: Pre-production Pre-production includes the planning of the music video for example deciding what the video’s aims, style, key messages and target audience will be. Stage 2: Production Production is the actual filming of the music video using a range of technology. Stage 3: Post-Production Post-Production refers to the editing of the video once the filming has been completed.

  3. What is the purpose of a music video for the companies/artists who make them? Music videos are primarily made as a marketing tool and to sell a brand. However, some could argue that music videos are made in order to get messages across to a large audience and to express certain emotions and feeling that an audience may not necessarily get just from listening to the music on its own.

Spike Jonze directed the music videos for songs such as ‘Cannonball’, (The Breeders) ‘Wonderboy’ (Tenacious D) and ‘Flashing Lights’(Kanye West) Marc Klasfeld directed the music videos for songs such as ‘Last Friday Night’, (Katy Perry) ‘In too Deep’ (Sum 41) and ‘A Thousand Miles’ (Vanessa Carlton) Melina Matsoukas directed the music videos for songs such as ‘Green Light’, (Beyoncé) ‘Closer’ (Ne-Yo) and ‘Bleeding Love’ (Leona Lewis)

The most likely reason for these particular music video’s success is the high production value which enables the audience to experience new and interesting effects. Also, these videos are likely to have a well choreographed narrative that audiences can relate to, therefore making the video more popular.

The music video with the highest budget of $7,000,000 is Michael Jackson ft. Janet Jackson’s ‘Scream’. The music video with the lowest budget is Merchandise ‘s ‘Lies Like These’ which was filmed in one take in a kebab shop at around midnight on a compact digital stills camera with a video setting.
