TV, Movies, and Radio • TV • Extremely popular, threatened to end radio and movie business • Many different shows, such as dramas, sports events, and children’s shows • Invention of tv dinner so families wouldn’t miss their favorite shows • Portrayed the ideal white family in shows • Stereotyped women and minorities • Shows Father Knows Best and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet stereotyped women as ideal mothers who did all the housework, but were always happy • Critics accused shows of having too much violence • Bad influence on children
TV, Movies, and Radio (cont) • Movies • In early 1950s, number of moviegoers decreased by half because of tv • Movies came back by offering things tv didn’t have • Size, color, surround sound • Experimented with Smell-o-vision and 3D glasses • Radio • Survived by offering different programs than TV did • Offered news, weather, music, and community issues instead of drama and variety shows
The Beat Movement • An attitude of non-conforming and counterculture that started to arise in the 50s • Attitude mostly held by writers, artists, and musicians in LA, San Francisco, and NYC • Shunned all the popular things the rest of America was doing • No tv • Not living in the suburbs • Not following clothing trends • NOT WORKING!!!!
Rock and Roll • Rock ‘N’ Roll became alive and frantic in the mid1950s • Elvis Presley, “Kind of Rock ‘N’ Roll,” • Sam Phillips, in 1955 sold Presley's contract to RCA for $35,000 • Many adults condemned this music, they believed that it would lead teenagers in the wrong direction • In a few cities, rock ‘n’ roll concerts were banned • African-American music had inspired the birth of rock ‘n’ roll • Jazz was made famous by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonius Monk. • Brought through the 1950s, by 1954 there were 250 radio stations nationwide for A-A. • At the end 1950s, A-A were still segregated from the dominant culture. It would become a powerful force for change in the 60s
