  2. POWER POINT PRESENTATION BY BEN O. ANDOH TOPIC “PREPARING YOUR STAFF FOR PROMOTION (SENIOR MEMBERS)”

  3. APPOINTMENT The appointment of a Senior Member is normally for 6years. The appointment is reviewed before the end of the sixth year. This may normally be renewed for 3years at the end of which the appointment is terminated unless the person can be promoted to the next higher grade. In exceptional circumstances contract may be extended for further 2years upon recommendation of College Appointments and Promotions Sub-Committee

Exceptions Assistant Lecturers and equivalent Appointment is for 2 years - -may be renewed for 2 years at the end of which the appointment shall be terminated unless the person is promoted as Lecturer Professorial grade This is a tenure appointment – expires on reaching compulsory retiring age

  5. Assessable Areas Before one is promoted he is assessed in the following areas Teaching Promotion of Knowledge Service The norms for the assessable areas are High 80 and above Good 60 – 79 Adequate 40 – 59 Inadequate below 40

  6. Eligibility for Promotion Lecturer/Research Fellow For promotion to the grade of Lecturer/Research Fellow, applicants must have attained the following: Served as Assistant Lecturer/Assistant Research Fellow or their equivalent for at least TWO years.

  7. Eligibility Cont’d 1 Assistant Lecturers/Assistant Research Fellows seeking promotion to Lecturer/Research Fellow grade must have performed satisfactorily in Teaching, Promotion of Knowledge and Service to the community as certified by the Head of Department, the College Appointments and Promotions Sub-Committee, and the UAPC.

  8. Eligibility Cont’d 2 In the three performance areas, applicant shall show evidence of Promotion of Knowledge and a minimum of “Adequate” performance for teaching.

Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Fellow For promotion to Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Fellow, applicants must have attained the following: Served as Lecturers/Research Fellows, or their equivalent for a minimum FOUR years. Conducted original research out of which one has a minimum total number of four (4) publications, after their appointment as Lecturers to their credit

  10. CONTD. 1 At least two (2) should have been published in refereed journals. The four (4) publications should earn the applicant a minimum of “Adequate” performance in Promotion of Knowledge, provided they are all assessed to be of good quality. Research Fellows seeking promotion to Senior Research Fellow must have a

  11. CONTD 2 minimum total number of six (6) publications, after their appointment as Research Fellows to their credit. At least four (4) should have been published in refereed journals. The six (6) publications should earn a minimum of “Good” performance in Promotion of Knowledge, provided they are all assessed to be of good quality.

CONTD 3 The minimum scores in the three performance areas shall be as follows: either (a) “High” performance in ANY TWO areas plus “Adequate” in the THIRD area or (b) “Good” performance in ALL the THREE AREAS *For promotion to Senior Research Fellow grade candidate must score at least “Good” in Promotion of Knowledge.

  13. Associate Professor For promotion to Associate Professor, applicants must have attained the following: Served for a minimum of FIVE(5) years since his last promotion Conducted original research out of which they have a minimum total number of six (6) publications.

  14. CONTD 1 At least four (4) of the publications shall be published in refereed journals. The six (6) publications shall earn the applicant minimum of “Good” in Promotion of Knowledge, provided they are all assessed to be of good quality. Senior Research Fellows seeking promotion to Associate Professor grade must have a minimum total number of eight (8) publications

  15. CONTD 2 after promotion to Senior Research Fellow. At least six (6) of the publications shall be published in refereed journals. The eight (8) publications shall earn the applicant “High” performance in Promotion of Knowledge provided they are all assessed to be of good quality. The minimum scores in the three performance areas should be as follows: (a)“High” performance in ANY TWO areas plus (b)“Good” performance in the THIRD area.

  16. Professor For promotion to the grade of Professor, applicants must have attained the following: Served as Associate Professor for a minimum of FIVE(5) years. Conducted original research out of which they have a minimum total of eight (8) publications, after promotion to Associate Professor. At least six (6) of the publications shall be published in refereed journals.

  17. CONTD 1 The eight (8) publications shall earn the applicant “High” in Promotion of Knowledge, provided they are all assessed to be of good quality. • The scores in ALL THREE areas of performance must be “HIGH”.

  18. Promotion Under Special Circumstances For exceptional performance candidates may be promoted out of turn, or before they satisfy the normally applied conditions. However, their performance must significantly exceed the terms required for the normal conditions.

  19. SENIOR MEMBERS (NON TEACHING) Assessable areas: Ability in Work/Knowledge in Work Promotion of Work/Application of Work Human Relations Service

  20. Norms for Assessable Areas Assessment of the four areas shall be as follows: Exceptional Very good Above average Adequate

  21. Promotion to Senior Assistant Registrar & Equivalent For promotion to Senior Assistant Registrar and Equivalent, the candidate should have a minimum of ABOVE AVERAGE in three areas of assessment and VERY GOOD in either Ability in Work/Knowledge in Work or Promotion of Work/Application of Knowledge.

  22. Promotion of Work/Application of Knowledge This includes written reports Papers Memoranda of Administrative matters and issues Any other relevant publications (if any) Articles/papers published in Refereed Journals shall be an added advantage.

  23. Human Relations Good image and comportment in dealing with colleagues, staff and the public.

  24. Service Contributions to the University Community, local, national and international communities other than one’s schedule of duties.
