  1. 2013 School Progress Reports Overview for Parents Office of Accountability

Purpose of School Progress Reports • To provide information for families and community members about the performance of their child’s school and other schools in CPS during the 2012-2013 school year. • To notify parents of the school’s Performance Policy results and probation status for 2013-2014. • To provide a holistic view of the school, including non-assessment measures such as Culture and Climate, health, the arts, college enrollment and persistence, and more. • To encourage dialog between parents, faculty, and school leadership about how the school is performing, it’s plan for improvement, and how parents can get involved. • To begin informing parents about the measures that will be used in the future in CPS, especially through the School Quality Rating Policy. Distribution • Reports will be available in non-charters by November 8 and in charter schools by November 12. • Reports are available in English and Spanish, as needed. • Make these reports available at Report Card Pickup. • Distribute at other upcoming parent events. Please distribute to all families by December 1 Office of Accountability

Tips for Communicating • Present these to your parents at a “town hall” forum or other event. • Don’t be defensive or dismissive about the results. • Explain why the school’s data looks the way it does. • Describe the school’s goals for 2014, and what the school is doing to meet it’s goals. This may be a good opportunity to talk about the CIWP. • Explain the difference between the Performance Policy and the metrics that will be in the SQRP (most of those metrics are on the report). • You may also want to explain the difference between CPS accountability and state accountability (NCLB/AYP). • Talk to parents about how they can get involved in helping the school meet its goals. • Ask for feedback that you can pass on for the design of next year’s school progress reports.
