Goal • Our goal is to design a home that uses renewable energy sources and includes several “green” design elements • The purpose is to make an eco-friendly home that costs less and does not damage the environment. • The economy in the United States is very bad, and Colin Farrel wishes to build a house that will save money on his energy bills in the end
Local Power Grid • The renewable energy provider for this home is going to be from a wind farm • A wind farm is a group of wind turbines in an area that produce an electrical current • Most wind farms are located off shore to attract the strong winds in order to make a higher powered electrical current.
Wind Farm • After the trouble with the economy, wind farms have become more popular as a cheaper alternative energy source
Location • Our choice of location for this ecofriendly home is in Northern California • There are big wind farms there which will make it easy to find a perfect spot to receive electricity. • Northern California is not too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer. It is a perfect place for many different types of plants
Design Elements • Straw Bale Housing • Passive Solar Heating • Tankless Water Heaters
Straw Bale Housing • This type of home is made of recycled materials. This insulation of the home is to be made of straw bales which is more environmentally friendly. • Strong, sturdy, inexpensive, earth friendly, super insulated, sound proofing • Long lasting • Replaces wood frame that is usually used when building a house
Passive Solar Heating • This is the process of the conversion of sunlight into heat. Heating systems are integrated into the building elements and materials. • reliable, mechanically simple, viable asset, presents most cost effective means • Long lasting lifespan • Replaces the furnace system
Tankless Instant Water Heaters • This process fully compensates all changes in incoming water temperatures. It also controls the flow rate to maintain a precise output temperature throughout the house • Endless supply of hot water, can save energy, expensive at the start • Can last up to 20 years with normal maintenance • Replace expensive boilers and hot water systems
L.E.E.D. Criteria • Use vegetated roofing for 50% of the roof • Near a subway • Provide no new parking • Make sure that all of the wood that is used for furniture is certified • Prohibit smoking, but if its necessary, make sure its 25ft away from all entries
Landscaping • Deciduous trees in the southwest side to let sun in for warmth and shade in the winter • Dark wood chips to absorb heat • A pond to cool the air • Scarlet Bugler- needs little water, beautiful, saves money • Sage plants- hardy, withstand droughts • The house is going to be made of a Lime Wash (white color) which goes on top of the plaster over the straw bales
