2. Instructions There really aren’t that many instructions to skating. First you have to grab your board. Second, you have to get on your board. Third, push with your foot, whichever one you feel comfortable pushing with. Try to keep your balance. After you get the hang of it you should be ready to ride. Tricks come in later. Some tricks are harder to do than others. The first trick you should learn is how to do an ollie. That is what you will use to jump everything and even do other tricks like kickflips and heelflips. You should skate in your neighborhood or at parks. Rob Dyrdek started a Skate Spot, Safe Spot program. He is putting skate parks where people can skate and also be safe from cops and security. 3. Famous Skaters Tony Hawk – He was the first skater to complete a 900 on a skateboard after 11 attempts. After he completed it, he said, “This is the best day of my life.” He has won gold medals 9 times in the X-Games. He sponsors for Birdie skateboards. Bam Margera – His real name is Brandon Cole Margera. He gained the nickname of Bam when he was just 3 years old because he kept running into walls. He sponsors Element skateboards. Rob Dyrdek – He is well known for his television roles in Rob & Big and Rob Dyrdek’s fantasy factory. He has broken 21 skating world records. He co-owns Rogue Status with Travis Barker. He is sponsored by Alien Workshop, Monster Energy Drinks, and DC shoes.

4. Skate History In the late 1940’s or early 1950’s skateboarding was born. Surfers from California wanted to surf something when the waves were flat. They put rollerblade wheels on a wooden box. Soon after, companies started producing skateboards. In 1976, Alan Gelfand created the “Ollie”. It is skateboarding’s key maneuver. In 1982, Rodney Mullen created the kickflip and all of its variations, including the Impossible, one of skateboarding’s hardest tricks. In the 1990’s, the military was performing an experiment with skateboards. It was called Urban Warrior ’99. It tested the usefullness of off-the-shelf skateboards. It was basically for maneuvering inside buildings and detecting tripwires and sniper fire. In 2004, Go Skateboarding Day was created by a bunch of skatebaording companies to promote skateboarding and help make it more noticeable to the world. Since then, skateboarding has been a huge sport in the United States. In 2002, there was 18.5 million skateboarders. 85% were under the age of 18 and 74% of them were male.
