SFSU HP/DP Award Increasing Dental Access for Students at Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) Objectives: • By June 1, 2013 increase the number of comprehensive exams provided to children between 12-15 yrs old by 20 percent. • By June 1, 2012, increase the number of PlannedTreatment Completed for children between 12-15 yrs old by 15 percent.

Background • Reduction in work force. • Reduced monetary resources for supplies and equipment. • No longer able to provide root canals, crowns, and bridges or any procedures that require lab work. • Community Outreach activities in the past have centered mainly on Head Start Children and Elementary School students.
Why this Age Group? • Manual dexterity to care for own oral hygiene. • Ability to make make healthy choices on choosing a non-cariogenic diet. • Lost all primary dentition and have unique opportunity (second chance) to be caries-free! • Caries if detected early can be restored with simple restorations. (NO root canals or extractions!)
Barriers to Care • Requirement of parents to be present for appointments. • Dental screenings provided, but parents had to schedule dental appointments for their children themselves. • Limited dental exam slots available. • Long wait between appointments for routine dental treatment.
Partnership with Santa Fe Indian School • Routine dental care is provided as long as students have parental consent on file without parents being present. • NOTE: Parents still required to be present for extractions or treatment of deep caries close to the nerve. • Priority exam slots reserved for students. • Priority routine treatment appointments reserved.
HP/DP Program Objectives: • Increase the number of comprehensive dental exams to children between 12 to 15 years old by 20 percent from the previous school year. 2. Increase the number of Planned Treatment Completed (PTCs) of children between 12 to 15 years old by 15 percent from the previous school year.
Interdepartmental Collaboration • Consultation with Dr. Coles, SFSU Pediatrician who works with Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) students. • Linda Hummingbird, SFIS School Nurse. • SFIS Administration • SFSU Business Office/ Patient Benefit Coordinators (PBCs)
Priority Chairs for SFIS Students • Wednesday Afternoon- Chair #2 designated only for SFIS Student new exams. • Thursday Chair #2 (All Day)- designated only for SFIS Student routine dental treatment. • Students had the option of scheduling appointments in “Priority Chair #2” or regular appointments available in the main clinic.
Goodies Purchased with Grant Funds • Clinpro Sealants • Epic Xylitol Gum & Mints • Happy Tooth Stress Ball • Customized Lip Balm • Customized Water Bottle • Spin Brush.
Quantitative Evaluation • By June 1, 2013 increased the number of comprehensive dental exams provided to children between 12-15 years old by 60 percent from the previous school year (Sept 1- May 31). • By June 1, 2013, increased the number of Planned Treatment Completed (PTCs) for children between 12 to 15 years old by 200 percent from the previous school year (Sept 1- May 31).
Qualitative Evaluation Patient Benefit Coordinator: • Include SFSU Booth at registration on student registration checklist. • Provide freebies at booth.
Qualitative Evaluation School Nurse: • Indicate whether student is a Day Student or Dorm Student. - Mail consent forms to students along with school registration forms.
Cont. Qualitative Evaluation Dental Staff Recommendations: - Include a telephone number where parent can be reached on the consent form. - Mail letter to parent after initial exam so that parents can be aware of how many cavities child has. - Better communication with SFIS Administration such that students aren’t scheduled for appointments on Testing Days at school.
Lessons Learned • Use grant funds for postage for mailing paperwork to students. • Use grant funds for goodies for booth at student registration. • Provider Shortage: Can keep Priority Chair #2 “open” as opposed to letting staff shortage affect scheduling. If we incorporate all our lessons learned, then next year should yield even better results!!!
