Fire & Ice

Fire & Ice. Robert F rost. Fire and Ice. Some say the world will end in fire , Some say in ice . From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire . But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great

  1. Fire&Ice Robert Frost

  2. Fire and Ice Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.

  3. Diction Frost’s diction is specific to the contrast between fire and ice • ice • destruction • hate • fire • desire • hate

  4. Imagery • Frost allows the reader to visualize two apocalyptic scenes, one in fire and one in ice • The repition of “fire” words leads the reader to believe that Frost sees the world ending in fire

  5. Details • The “apocalyptic” idea comes into play when the poem opens with “some say the world will end in…” and is then reiterated with the phrases “perish” and “destruction”

  6. Language • The poem’s language uses words that have either a “hot” or “cold” connotation to show contrast

  7. Structure • The poem’s structure shows parallels between fire and ice • The shift occurs after line 4

  8. Background Music • Background Song : I See Fire – Ed Sheeran (Kygo Remix)

  9. Song Lyrics Oh, misty eye of the mountain below Keep careful watch of my brothers' souls And should the sky be filled with fire and smoke Keep watching over Durin's sons If this is to end in fire Then we should all burn together Watch the flames climb high into the night Calling out father, oh, Stand by and we will Watch the flames burn auburn on The mountain side high And if we should die tonight Then we should all die together Raise a glass of wine for the last time Calling out father, oh, Prepare as we will Watch the flames burn auburn on The mountain side Desolation comes upon the sky Now I see fireInside the mountainI see fireBurning the treesAnd I see fireHollowing soulsI see fireBlood in the breezeAnd I hope that you remember me

  10. Song Lyrics (continued) Oh, should my people fallthen surely I'll do the sameConfined in mountain hallsWe got too close to the flameCalling out father, oh,Hold fast and we willWatch the flames burn auburn onThe mountain sideDesolation comes upon the skyNow I see fireInside the mountainI see fireBurning the treesI see fireHollowing soulsI see fireBlood in the breezeAnd I hope that you remember meAnd if the night is burningI will cover my eyesFor if the dark returnsThen my brothers will dieAnd as the sky is falling downIt crashed into this lonely townAnd with that shadow upon the groundI hear my people screaming outNow I see fireInside the mountainsI see fireBurning the treesI see fireHollowing soulsI see fireBlood in the breeze

  11. Connections • The song mimics the poem’s apocalyptic theme • “should the sky be filled with fire and smoke” • “if this is to end in fire, then we should all burn together, watch the flames climb high into the night” • “and if we should die tonight, then we should all die together” • “desolation comes upon the sky • “and I see fire burning the trees and I see fire hollowing souls and I see fire, blood in the breeze and I hope that you remember me” • “should my people fall then surely I’ll do the same”
