  2. What is the difference between geography & history? Geography History An account of what has happened in the lives of different people. • The study of people, their environments, and their resources.

  3. Location

  4. What is LOCATION? • Asking: Where did that happen?? • EXACT LOCATION: The absolute location of a place (latitude & longitude, address) • RELATIVE LOCATION: Where something is located in relation to something else.

  5. LOCATION examples EXACT LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION The movie theater is one mile south of my house.

  6. Place

  7. What is PLACE?? • A more detailed description of a location. • PHYSICAL FEATURES: climate, soil, animal life, bodies of water, etc. • HUMAN FEATURES: kinds of houses, means of transportation, ways of earning a living, languages, religions, etc.

  8. PLACE examples PHYSICAL HUMAN Condos, Apartments, One & Two-Story Houses Speak English Drive cars, ride busses, ride bikes • Tropical Climate • Near the Atlantic Ocean • Has a lot of insects and rodents

  9. Human-Environment Interaction

  10. What is INTERACTION?? • How people adaptto and change their natural environment. • Has both positive & negative effects on the environment. • EXAMPLES: Preservation of national parks, Tearing down farm land to build a mall.

  11. Movement

  12. What is MOVEMENT?? • Movement of people, goods, & ideas. • People move from place to place to get what they want or need. • EXAMPLES: Moving from Illinois to Arizona for a job, Belief that slavery is wrong moved from Europe to the United States.

  13. Region

  14. What is REGION?? • An area of the world that has similar characteristics (physical, human, or cultural) • Can be any size!!! • EXAMPLES: Southern Arizona = desert climate Chinatown = same culture, dress, traditions Amish Community = same dress, same religious beliefs, same ways to earn money.
