What is the difference between geography & history? Geography History An account of what has happened in the lives of different people. • The study of people, their environments, and their resources.
What is LOCATION? • Asking: Where did that happen?? • EXACT LOCATION: The absolute location of a place (latitude & longitude, address) • RELATIVE LOCATION: Where something is located in relation to something else.
LOCATION examples EXACT LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION The movie theater is one mile south of my house.
What is PLACE?? • A more detailed description of a location. • PHYSICAL FEATURES: climate, soil, animal life, bodies of water, etc. • HUMAN FEATURES: kinds of houses, means of transportation, ways of earning a living, languages, religions, etc.
PLACE examples PHYSICAL HUMAN Condos, Apartments, One & Two-Story Houses Speak English Drive cars, ride busses, ride bikes • Tropical Climate • Near the Atlantic Ocean • Has a lot of insects and rodents
What is INTERACTION?? • How people adaptto and change their natural environment. • Has both positive & negative effects on the environment. • EXAMPLES: Preservation of national parks, Tearing down farm land to build a mall.
What is MOVEMENT?? • Movement of people, goods, & ideas. • People move from place to place to get what they want or need. • EXAMPLES: Moving from Illinois to Arizona for a job, Belief that slavery is wrong moved from Europe to the United States.
What is REGION?? • An area of the world that has similar characteristics (physical, human, or cultural) • Can be any size!!! • EXAMPLES: Southern Arizona = desert climate Chinatown = same culture, dress, traditions Amish Community = same dress, same religious beliefs, same ways to earn money.
