Short Division Why go the long way round?
Short division (or compact method) is a good method to use when you are confident in division. If you are able to tackle short division it can stop you from making mistakes when you add up your “chunks” in the chunking method. You do need to be good at your tables for short division!
172 ÷ 5 (How many sets of 5 in 172?) 5 172 3 5 1 7 2 2 (We say 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2. Carry the 2 over) 3 4 r 2 5 1 7 2 (We say 22 ÷ 5 = 4 r 2.) So, 172 ÷ 5 = 34 remainder 2
584 ÷ 26 (How many sets of 26 in 584?) 26 584 2 26 5 8 4 6 ( We say 58 ÷ 26 = 2 r 6. Carry the 6 over 2 2 r 12 26 5 8 4 ( We say 64 ÷ 26 = 2 r 12. So, 584 ÷ 26 = 22 remainder 12
So much quicker! However, you must remember to set out your calculation carefully. Make sure the hundreds, tens and units re all in the correct columns or it could go wrong. You could always check your work by chunking.
Brilliant! You have now cracked division!
