Selfishness Philippians 2:1-4
Definition and Explanation • “Concerned chiefly or only with oneself” (AHTD) • Associate selfishness with stinginess • Runs over everything and anyone to reach goal • Goal is self-gratification
Selfishness consumed with self • Fulfill my desires • No concern for others at all • Selfishness is ugly and has no good • Seeks self gratification, but can never find it • What is sought will, after being gained, be cast aside for something else • The cycle of selfishness is almost like an addiction
Lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power Which one does not involve selfishness? Examples • Ahab and Naboth’s vineyard (1 Kgs. 21:1-16) • Didn’t get his way • Pouted like a child • Look what it took to get what he wanted • Pharisee in the temple (Lk. 18:9-14) • Look at the list in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 The extent of selfishness is greater than we may realize
Where Is Selfishness Found? • In every criminal act ever committed • In the adult who acts like a child • In the child who disobeys the parent • In the parent who beats a child • In the wife who disobeys her husband • In the husband who cheats on his wife
In every case of divorce • At the heart of every church problem • In the Christian who falls away • In the fallen Christian who won’t repent • In the one who won’t obey the gospel
In the one who is cast into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels
What Is The Solution? • First admit to being selfish • Look to Jesus • Never has there been anyone more selfless • So selfless He died for others (2 Cor. 8:9; Rom. 5:8)
Become a living sacrifice (Rom. 12:1-2) • Goal is to please God, not self (1 Thess. 4:1; cf. Heb. 11:6) • Learn contentment (Phil. 4:10-13) • Be concerned for others (Phil. 2:1-4) • Practice true love (1 Cor. 13:4-7)
