Overview • According to the National Safety Council back injury is the 2nd most common workplace problem. And, it is a problem that can be prevented.
RULES FOR LIFTING Never bend, lift, and twist at the same time! Bend your knees and use your legs to lift!
PLAN THE LIFT • Analyze what needs to be accomplished. • How heavy? • How far? • Where? • Shape? • Easy to move? • Anything in the way? • Stand in front with feet about shoulder width apart with one foot in front of the other.
USE CORRECT POSITIONING Bend the knees and tighten the stomach muscles. Using both hands, grasp the object firmly and pull it as close as possible to your body.
LIFT WITH THE LEGS Lift with the legs. Do not lift with the back. Avoid jerky movements. Don’t bend at the waist. Pivot on the toes to turn.
LOWER THE LOAD Reverse the procedures. Bend the knees and position the load in front of you. Keep in contact with the load until it is secure.
THINK BEFORE YOU LIFT! • Use your own common sense. • You are the major cause of your injuries. • You have the major responsibility for preventing them!
Always be sure that blades are properly seated in knives and that knives are properly closed and/or fastened together before use.
Always use sharp blades. A dull blade requires more force and is more likely to slip than a sharp one. Change the blade whenever it starts to tear instead of cut.
Always keep your free hand (and other body parts) away from the line of the cut.
Always pull— never push the knife. The blade could break off wedging in the material and cutting your arm severely.
Never leave a blade open! • Always retract the blade when not in use.
Slips, trips and falls occur frequently! • According to the U.S. Department of labor, slips, trips and falls are the most common occupational accident. • Over 17% of disabling work injuries are caused by falls.
Causes • Wet spills or contamination on floors: water, mud, oil, grease, food, etc. • Product breakage that is not immediately cleaned up

Housekeeping • Keep walkways, aisles and stairs clean of clutter • Make sure rugs and mats lay flat and secure • Make sure ladders, step stools, etc. are properly placed and out of the walking aisles Clear, well-defined walkways in sales area and in warehouse area.
A Rule of Thumb… If you drop it, pick it up. If you spill it, wipe it up. Go where you are looking, and look where you are going.
