Single father families increased from 393,000 in 1970 to 2 million.
The Family • Between 1970 and 2000, households with five or more people decreased from 21% to 10%, whereas the number of households with only one or two people increased from 46% to 59%. • The median age for marriage in 1970 was 20.8 years and in 2000 it was 26.8 years. • Children in married couple families are less likely to live in poverty than children living only with one parent.

Poverty • Twice as likely to repeat a grade and drop out of high school. • 1.4 times more likely to have a learning disability, 1.3 times more likely to be at risk for parent-reported emotional and behavioral problems, 3.1 times more likely for teen pregnancy, 6.8 times more likely to be victims of child abuse and neglect, and 2.2 times more likely to become a victim of violent crime.
