Times Have Changed… • New generation of students • ICT’s (information and communication tech.) are changing • Cause of concern for teachers • Should it be a concern?
Get With The Times, Educators!! • If communication is changing, then educators need to adapt • Writing and Reading go hand in hand • Schools need to EMBRACE change!!
Technology is King • America= Information based, service economy • These changes require certain skills for the new workforce
Using the Internet in Writing • Numerous sources for knowledge • Developing Writers: A Workshop for High School Teachers(http://www.learner.org/workshops/hswriting/workshops/workshop8/) Eight video: Writing in the 21ST century • Students see the Internet as a tool, and at time a necessity, for learning, working, and communicating
Instruction via the Web • Authors offer insight to viewers through the use of online videos • They speak about writing processes, and their inspirations for writing • Teachers can use these sights in order to springboard students into reading and writing assignments • Judy Bloom (www.judybloom.com) provides insight to her own writing process
Online Forums • Blogs, wikis, cloud computing can be tools for enhancing a student’s writing ability • Teachers can use these forums(i.e Dr. Kern’s wiki space) to view student work all at once, offer insight and make comments
Education and the Web • Resistance is futile!!! • Integrating new writing instruction can bridge between emerging forms of writing/communication on the Internet and make it more engaging and meaningful to students
