CHM 585 Test 2 Study Guide
Tuesday October 30 Chapters 5 - 16
Chapters 5 & 6 • Isotactic / syndiotactic / atactic • Addition polymerization versus condensation • Know how major polymers are made ( for other chapters also) • Be able to write the synthesis and structure for major polymers ( also ones from other chapters) • PET from BTX and ethylene
Chapter 7 • Understand basic concepts of chain entanglement, Tg • Be able to calculate Mw, Mn, Polydispersity
Chapter 8 • Processing will not be emphasized on the test • Similarly, the two case studies we discussed will not be emphasized on the test • PI from a new source of carbon black • adipic acid dryer problems
Chapter 9 • Know trends • As crystallinity and density increases, what happens to properties • As molecular weight increases, what happens to properties • Major applications • Be able to write the structure for EEA & EVA; from the structure be able to name them • What does ethyl acrylate impart? Vinyl acetate?
Chapter 10 • Don’t need to know the organometallic catalyst chemistry • Know the polyurethane structure • Formed from diisocyanates and diols • Be able to draw the first few steps of PS polymerization via • Anionic polymerization • Cationic polymerization • Radical polymerization
Chapter 10 continued • Know what ABS is • ABS structure • why each monomer
Chapter 11 • Miscible blends have a single Tg
Chapter 12 • Will probably ask questions in the following (or similar) format: • Given several structures, circle the ones that are antioxidants • Given several structures, circle the ones that are flame retardants
Chapter 13 • Given costs of starting materials and yield, be able to calculate raw material costs of a material
Chapter 14 • Be able to write a (don’t need to know them all) synthesis of nabumetone • Be able to write the structure for cholesterol and cortisone and be able to label steroid rings as A,B, C, D • Do not need to memorize the other structures
Chapter 15 Experimental Design • Know the general idea, but do not need to know the intricate details
Chapter 16 • Understand SPC • Generally how it is used • What UCLS are used • When a process is “in control”
Sample questions 1 • Show the synthetic steps for PET from ethylene and p-xylene
Sample questions 2 • Label each of the following polypropylene chains as atactic, isotactic or syndiotactic.
Sample questions 3 • Draw the structure for nylon 6,12
Sample questions 4 • Draw the structure for nylon 12.
Sample questions 5 • Indicate the typical effect (increases or decreases or no effect) on each of the following properties as polymer molecular weight increases. • a. impact strength • b. tensile strength • c. viscosity
Sample questions 6 • Draw the structure for EEA.
Sample questions 7 • Draw the first few steps ( as far as the trimer) showing the cationic synthesis of polystyrene
Sample questions 8 • If two molecules are combined where one molecule has a molecular weight of 5000 and a second a molecular weight of 50,000 • What is the Mn, Mw, Polydispersity?
Sample questions 9 • Circle any of the compounds which are common flame retardants
Sample Question 10 • What is the raw material cost of dimethylterephthalate, assuming terephthalic acid costs $0.30 per pound and methanol ( density = 0.8 g/cc) costs $0.58 per gallon. • Given: reaction is quantitative; isolated yield = 98% Cost of waste treatment at $0.10 per pound A gallon of water weighs 8.3 pounds
