Green Growth Investment Forum Brussels, Belgium October 6-7, 2011 The Way Forward: CEIS/SRC by Tricia Williamson, Technical Information Officer, Caribbean Energy Information System, Scientific Research Council
Value CEIS/SRC places on Green Investments in the Region • Green Investments are highly valued as they • Create jobs and build capacity • Facilitate economic growth through development of a sustainable green economy • Increase the resilience of Caribbean/ECS against world fuel prices through a reduction in the reliance of petroleum based products. • Offer Environmental benefits for SIDS
The Future of Green Investments & the Green Economy in the Caribbean There is a captive audience, particularly in the private sector in the Caribbean that led to the development of CEEBIP • Greater focus is needed on Private sector partnerships in relation to carbon markets and its potential. • Lobby for tax incentives to make green investment for attractive. • Governments need to facilitate links with privates sector and investment companies to strengthen linkages, outcomes and benefits from these investment projects to spur economic growth while minimizing the vulnerability as SIDS.
Role of CEIS/SRC in Assisting the Caribbean/ECS in Support of Sustainable Development CEIS/SRC can: • Through its connections with Member states as the established regional energy network - keep members in the loop on what’s happening, offer support and feedback. • Seek to co-ordinate a regional Green Investment Initiatives Workshop in the Caribbean working with partners to bring all stakeholders together including private sector representatives and investors to the table. • Act as a partner institution /using CIPORE and CEEBIP as tools to ensure linkages. • Provide expertise and support for future projects; more importantly play a role in sustaining investments beyond the project life cycle.
