  2. Session Outcomes • Identify the need for a school wide/content literacy plan. • Identify strategies for engaging teachers in building a vision plan for literacy across content areas. • Identify elements of an action plan that would support building literacy across content areas.

The Last Word • Three team members will read the information on a card and share a one sentence summary containing the key words to the group. • One team member will have the final word on the information presented. This team member will identify and share the most compelling information to support the need for a school-wide literacy initiative in a one sentence summary.

  7. Are Our Schools Ready? Currently, many schools lack the capacity to integrate literacy instruction in the content areas. Even if teachers are receptive to the idea of incorporating literacy into their daily instruction, they lack the training and resources needed to deliver that instruction.   9. START the Discussion Begin building capacity for a school - wide literacy initiative by starting the discussion at: • school faculty meetings • grade level content teams • grade level teams across disciplines • mixed grade/content teams • leadership team

As you review, ask • Who would participate in the discussion? • What would be the intended outcome of participating in the discussion? • Share with the whole group. • Choose one activity to share with the whole group. How would you use or modify the activity to use in your school?

  14. What is an effective school-wide literacy plan? An effective school-wide literacy plan guides action on many levels, focusing multiple activities toward increasing students' reading, writing, and thinking skills. A comprehensive literacy action plan has action steps related to key areas.

  17. Review Examples With your group, review an example of one component of a school-wide literacy action plan. As you discuss - • evaluate examples given • provide reflective feedback or questions • add other ideas that you think would further support a plan of action.
