Minority Youth are Disproportionately Detained Minority youth 2/3rd of total population Girls: • African American (3xs) and Latinas 2 1/2xs) and American Indians (4xs) are more likely to be incarcerated than White girls (Sickmund, et. al., 2011)
Minority Youth’s Pre-Detained Contextual Facts African American Latino youth are likely to be disproportionately: Poor and/live in extreme poverty (3x) Uninsured (1 in 8 AA and 1 in 6 Latino) Reside in under resourced communities Attend low achieving schools Obese, uncontrolled asthma, early sexual experiences, and unmet mental health issues Food insecurity • Children’s Defense Fund (2011; 2012)
