  1. Signs And Symptoms Of Vocal Cord Problems There can be a number of factors that can cause voice problems. Some of these problems can be easily solved, while other vocal problems can be an indication of something very serious. However, certain factors could seem life threatening to you, because they could represent symptoms of a critical problem (like cancer) or because they may be an indication of another problem that is creating the voice disorder (like esophageal reflux). The larynx produces the human voice. Air from the lungs passes when you exhale. Typically, there is no sound produced while the breathing process occurs. However, when the vocal cords open and close, as air passes through them, sound is created. This sound becomes your words when you use your tongue, teeth and palate. It is a complex process that demands a great deal of coordination. Any type of malfunction like problems in breathing, weakness in the facial muscular structure or any problem in vocal cords, can affect a normal speaking voice. A normal voice is judged on the basis of the quality of the pitch and volume that is appropriate to the conversation’s setting; and whether or not they "fit" with the personality of the specific person who is talking. Any type of misuse (like excessive yelling at a sports match, for example) can create a temporary or even permanent change in your voice. Breathing in a smoke-filled environment or other environmentally hazardous areas (such as industrial zones or chemical-rich places) can also cause vocal problems. Quite often, neurological problems like Parkinson's, ALS, stroke, or other medical conditions are also the cause of voice disorders.

  2. A voice problem exists when the quality of the voice distracts from the speaker's message. If the listener becomes so distracted by the speaker's voice that they can't concentrate on the message, it is a good reason to identify the problem. A vocal cord problem also exists when the speaker feels a discomfort or pain while talking; and if it continues for more than 2 weeks in the absence of the cold or allergy. A voice problem also exists when the speaker points that their voice is not pleasing to others and its impacts to their social or professional life. If you have also any vocal problem for more than one week, you are advised to have a meeting with your physician for a proper diagnosis. There are professional voice specialists who can diagnose and treat vocal problems without the need for risky surgical procedures. They are known as non-surgical voice repair specialists. Anyone who experiences pain or discomfort as a result of their speaking voice should seek a voice professional who focuses on reducing or eliminating the cause of the problem or improving the overall vocal quality.
