Reasons for Family Change Success Criteria I can identify the following reasons for Family change. I can distinguish changes from 1950’s to the modern world.
1. Changing Norms & Values • In the past, women are expected to get married, to give up work and to stay at home. Today, they can even land higher positions than men. • Nowadays, people live together or have children before marriage.
2. Technological Change • Until 1960’s, women uses pill. As knowledge in medical technology grows, the families become smaller and smaller, women could have sex outside marriage, and more people live into extreme old age.
3. Secularisation • In Christian religion, marriage is sacred and divorce is a sin. But today, many people disregard religious ideas including marriage and accepted divorce.
4. Gender attitude • Until 1970s, women became feminist and challenged traditional ideas. • They get jobs on their own; no longer rely on their husbands, chooses divorce, and doesn’t tolerate domestic abuse.

Exam Practice As social norms and values have changed over time, so have laws. Many laws affecting family life have changed over the past 60 years. For example, divorce is now much easier to arrange that it was in the 1950s. Another law that has changed family life is abortion law. Before 1967, if women wanted to end a pregnancy, they would have to break the law. Many women died from unsafe illegal abortions. Now, women can choose whether to continue with a pregnancy. Men who are not married have more rights over their children than they once did; however, they do not have the same rights as married fathers.
