  1. S y mp t oms , Ca us e s a nd T r e a t me nt s f or E p i r e t i na l Me mb r a ne Epiretinal membrane is a thin fibrous layer that forms over the macular. While almost transparent, this layer can make it hard for the patient to see. While this condition does not cause blindness, it does have a serious impact on your central vision. The symptoms associated with epiretinal membrane can be so mild the patient has no idea they have a problem with absolutely no symptoms or side effects to those patients that suffer from distorted and blurred vision as a result. The only way to determine if epiretinal membrane is responsible for your blurred and distorted vision is to use a Amster Grid, which is a diagnostic tool which can see the layer and identify the problem, providing a fast and accurate assessment. The causes of epiretinal membrane is a thin layer of fibrous tissue that lies over the macular. Often this contacts like scar tissue. Over time it pulls on the retina, which results in the puckering of the macular and the swelling of the retina. This is a common condition resulting in epiretinal membranes. If you are suffering with blurred or distorted vision, its advisable to have your eyes tested to rule out this condition and ensure the best possible outcome. This condition can occur in patients that have never had eye problems in the past. Very often epiretinal membrane is caused by changes in the vitreous gel. The vitreous gel is a gel like substance that gives your eye its shape. On other occasions, the epiretinal membrane can be caused by disease, previous surgery or trauma. Treatment varies based on the severity of the epiretinal membrane. Patients that are not bothered and have no or few symptoms will be monitored on a regular basis with no need for further treatment unless the condition worsens. For patients who suffer from the membrane, they will be offered surgery.

  2. The surgery offered carefully removes the epiretinal membrane in a fast and effective method which is carried out as a day case, so patients can return home to recover in comfort. It's very important when having this surgery that you arrange for someone to fetch you at the hospital and be with you for a minimum of twenty four hours after the surgery. Ensure when it comes to epiretinal membrane that you choose a reputable and reliable ophthalmologist with years of industry knowledge and experience. It's recommended to do your research and find a minimum of three eye surgeons you feel you can trust. You can use this to learn as much about each of the surgeons as possible from how long they have been providing this type of surgery to where they operate from. Other things you will want to focus on when learning about the ophthalmologist you are thinking of using is their experience with this type of surgery and their success rate.Always take the time to review the surgeon before making any final decisions. There are independent review sites, online forums and the NHS website that offers reviews on both private and NHS eye specialists, so you can make your decision with complete confidence. This step may appear to be hard work and a waste of time, but you will be amazed how this simple step enables you to eliminate a surgeon from your short list. The final step is to compare the remaining surgeons and then contact them to see who can fit you in the soonest. You will have a one on one consultation with the surgeon so you can speak to them directly and have any questions you have answered before the surgery.
