Payments for Ecosystem Services: Development of pilots to lever new income streams from water companies Chris Manning – Water Policy Officer
Introduction PES – aspiration in South Downs Partnership Management Plan. Policy 2 – develop landscape-scale partnerships and initiatives to focus on enhancing the key ecosystem services delivered by the National Park.
What are payments forecosystem services? Ecosystem services - the diverse benefits that we derive from the natural environment. Examples include the supply of food, water and timber (provisioning services). PES - schemes in which the beneficiaries, or users, of ecosystem services provide payment to the stewards, or providers, of ecosystem services.

Water companies (potential beneficiary) have a clear dependency on the provision of an ecosystem service (water quality regulation) for groundwater & surface water. NIA groundwater modelling project & SMART – Sediment & Mitigation Actions for the River Rother.
Towards the developmentof PES… Identifying where catchment management/PES could be a more sustainable/economic way of securing water quality than more expensive engineering solutions – working with water companies and Environment Agency. Now need to move to 1b – investigate to build relations/trust with land managers to identify prospective sellers – working with ARRT & Southern Water developing a potential pilot…
