American History I Primary Source Activities
Unit 1: Mayflower Compact • Read the Mayflower Compact • Divide the sections amongst your group members and answer the questions. • Share the answers amongst your group • Create your own “Mayflower Compact” pretending that you showed up to class and there was no teacher. You will need to establish a system for running class, rules for behavior, and expectations for what should be expected from a “citizen” of your classroom. • You will present your “Mayflower Compact” and answer random review questions from the worksheet in front of the class.
Unit 2: The Declaration of Independence • Read the Declaration of Independence • Answer the questions based on Initial impressions and the questions about signing the Document. • Focus your group on the section assigned specifically to your group. • Pretend that you are King George III or a member of Parliament and you received the Declaration of Independence by email. Create a reply, Illustrate a screenshot of your reply on blank white paper, and create a hashtag that sums up the emotion in your reply. • You will share the answers from your section of the Declaration, your reply, and the hashtag you created in front of the class.
Unit 3: The Constitution • Read the section of the Constitution assigned to your group. • Write a summary of your section and answer the associated questions. • Create a 30 second advertisement for the Constitution that will sell that document to the people. Take the ideas from your advertisement and put them into a newspaper or magazine ad using a blank piece of white paper. • You will present your summary, the answers to the questions in your section, your skit (advertisement), and your newspaper/magazine ad in front of the class. • You will need to pay attention to the other groups as they go in order to get the answers for the other sections on your worksheet.
