  3. PSCBW Structure • Non-Profit, Peer-led Volunteer Board • Affiliated with the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) • Professionals from a Wide Variety of Backgrounds

What is Credentialing? • Credentialing assures that a person with the Certified Prevention Professional (CPP)/ Internationally Certified Prevention Specialist (ICPS) designation has: • Completed a peer review process of their candidate portfolio • Successfully passed the written IC&RC International Certification Examination for Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Specialists

  5. CPP/ICPS Certification This certification has been developed for substance abuse prevention professionals. • Demonstrates mastery of the fundamental skills • Applicable across all practice settings • Voluntary credentialing in Washington State (some employers may require it)

  6. Benefits of Certification • Establishes professional standards • Attests to individual’s knowledge and skills • Assists employers in identifying qualified practitioners • Sense of pride and accomplishment • Promotes continued professional development

CPP/ICPS Eligibility Requirements Completion of a peer review process of qualifications (Candidate Portfolio) that includes: • 2,000 hours of ATOD prevention work experience • 150 hours of prevention specific education • Verification of 120 hours supervised experience in the five IC&RC prevention domains • Signed a prevention specific code of ethics statement • Meets requirements of criminal history background check AND Successfully pass the written IC&RC International Certification Examination for Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Abuse Prevention Specialists.

  8. Prevention Work Experience • Minimum of 2,000 hours can be paid or volunteer. • Can be from multiple sources and over multiple years. • Prevention related work – see prevention domains. • Community organizing/mobilizing and most public health education work. • Treatment, therapy, counseling, and cessation work is typically not accepted. • Suggest submitting a job description or statement describing work as prevention related.

Prevention Education Prerequisites • Minimum of 150 Total Hours Required: • 14 hour ATOD education/training • 50 hours ATOD prevention education/training • 6 hours prevention-specific ethics education/training • 10 hours risk & protective factor education/training • 70 hours general prevention education/training

Applying for CPP/ICPS Certification A completed application must be postmarked on or before the application deadline, as listed in the following table, to be reviewed and considered for the soonest requested test date. Application Deadline Test Date December 7, 2011 (Wednesday)    March 9, 2012 (Friday) March 7, 2012 (Wednesday) June 9, 2012 (Saturday) June 13, 2012 (Wednesday) September 14, 2012 (Friday At the time of application submission, candidate must also include a non-refundable application and examination fee of $200.

CPP/ICPS Certificationand Renewal Requirements • Certification is based upon a successful Candidate Portfolio + passing the written IC&RC examination • Renewed every two years if: • Renewal fees paid • 40 hours of continuing education completed and documentation submitted • Criminal History Background check requirements met

  15. CPP/ICPS Continuing Education 40 Continuing Education Hours are required every two years with documentation: • 20 hours alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention education • 20 hours general prevention education

  17. Prevention Certification Reciprocity • Moving into Washington State? Contact the PSCBW for requirements: • Reciprocity application form • Documentation from original certifying state • Fee paid • Background check

Prevention Recertification • A CPP/ICPS who does not complete the renewal procedures required every two years will have his/her certification automatically lapse.  • The recertification process is for those who individuals whose certification had lapsed and who are now interested in applying to regain their CPP credential.   19. Multi-tiered Prevention System • Offer different credentials • Associate Prevention Professional (APP) Entry-level certification • Advanced level credential to be developed

  20. Associate Prevention Professional (APP) • Targeted toward students or beginning professionals who are learning prevention skills and entering the field. • APP application fee is $50 of which $25 may be applied toward a CPP application. • Easier to obtain: (a) experience is 500 hours; (b) education/training is 70 hours (35 ATOD Education/ATOD Prevention Education + 35 General Prevention Education).

Future Goals & Objectives • Improve and provide the Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training. • Enhance professional development through expanding continuing education. • Move toward a greater market presence • Raise awareness among employers to encourage hiring and advancing individuals who hold the CPP/ICPS credentials
