  1. HeLa: Immortality of Cells? By Warren Lowell

  2. Welcome to Living Environment 10th Grade Science • Welcome to Wednesday September 14th • Good morning students! • Take out your textbooks and follow along with the teacher’s PowerPoint presentation

  3. The Cell Theory • All organisms are made up of one or more cells. • The cell is the basic unit of organization of all organisms. • All cells come from other cells all ready in existence.

  4. Eukaryotic Cell Organelles • Nucleus- the brains of the cell • Controls metabolism and reproduction • Largest organelle – if removed cell dies • Nucleolus – ribosomes are assembled • Contains DNA- deoxyribonucleic acid • hereditary information.

  5. Textbook to Trade Book Cross Reference • “Fried egg with the yolk being the nucleus” • Quote from The Immortal Life of HEnrietta LAcks

  6. The Parts of the Nucleus

  7. Cell Division • All living cells come from other living cells. • During mitosis, the nucleus of the cell divides, forming two nuclei with identical genetic information.

  8. Stages of Mitosis • Mitosis produces two genetically identical cells. • Mitosis is referred to in the following stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

  9. Cell Division Vocabulary • Vocabulary matching game

  10. Mitosis Video clip Mitosis Click on view to start short 1 minute video clip on mitosis

  11. Mitosis Quiz • Students go to your computers and take the Mitosis Ouizhttp://www.biologycorner.com/quiz/qz_mitosis.html

  12. Cellular Organization • Cell • Tissue – group of cells functioning together. • Organ – group of tissues functioning together. • Organ System – group of organs functioning together. • Organism – group of organ systems functioning together. 1. All organisms are made of one or more cells 2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function 3. All cells come from preexisting cells

  13. Homework Review: Various Stages of Mitosis • Homework tonight review today’s PowerPoint slides in conjunction with websites listed below and be prepared tomorrow to explain mitosis and HeLa contribution to medical research. • http://www.cellsalive.com • http://www.classzone.com • http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/cancerlibrary/what-is-cancer
