Tournaments/Festivals SCHEDULE DO’S & DON’TS • Meet in Judge Lounge to receive packets & instructions • 2 Rounds • Snacks are often provided • If you are not scheduled for a round, please stay in the judges lounge as you might be used in the case of an absence. • DO return critiques after EVERY round • DO go straight to your next round • DO bring pens and your own stopwatch! • DO give oral critiques as time allows

  4. The Categories • ALWAYS READ THE RULES BEFORE YOU JUDGE A ROUND! EVERY ROUND! • A modified critique of WHSFA format is used.

  5. Demonstration Speaking • Speech event – demonstrating a process or activity • Visual aids, props & costumes are allowed • An assistant is permitted, but not considered a contestant • 5 minutes – NOT including setup and tear down

  6. Informative Speaking • Speech event, informative speech on any topic • Note cards permitted • Four minutes maximum

  7. Interpretation of Poetry • Interpretation event, interpretation of poetry material (single work or program with a common theme) • Manuscript required • 5 minutes

  8. Interpretation of Prose • Interpretation event, interpretation of prose material • Manuscript required • 5 minutes

  9. Storytelling • Interpretation event, presenting imaginative material in narrative form • Speaker prepares one story on a topic of his or her choosing • Speaker MUST remain seated in chair at all times • 5 minutes

  10. Evaluation Sheet Writing • Ballots have 5 Point layout • Keep time with a stopwatch only • Write DURING the performance • Comments should always be: • CLEAR – write what you mean, no sarcasm • CONSTRUCTIVE – be nice!  • LEGIBLE – if they can not read it, it does not help • Turn in sheets to TAB after every round! • We do not rank students against each other.

  11. General Notes • Investing in a stopwatch is a good idea. However, LPS does provide a stopwatch for each room at the festival. • Tournaments vs. Festivals – WFCA/WHSFA • LPS and LLHS compete in several tournaments together. Come enjoy a round or two. • Judging Handbook will be developed for 2013
