“A lot of guys were getting nervous thinking we were going into combat, but most were just excited. Its funny, but as much as guys talk about not wanting to be in a danger zone, I think we really do want it (25).” It shows on how the men are all scared especially the narrator, is nervous about going in to combat but deep down they all are excited for it and been waiting for it.
“I could feel my heart beat faster as we crossed the border into Iraq (42).” • This shows the narrator is scared because he knows he is there and there is no turning back now. Shows that he is so nervous about going into combat just his adrenalin is just going throw his body.
“Even though the war is supposed to be over, there is still fighting in and around Bagdad, and the sounds of bombing just outside the city at night are awesome (126).” • Everybody is there and excited for combat ready to kill an iraqi the sounds of bombing seems like thunderstorms in the distance get the men ready.
“Any time a guy gets a large package from home, everybody gathers around hoping its something to eat (138).” • All the men are hungry but they work together as brother when one gets food they all get food they work together.
“gentlemen, ladies, welcome to Doha by the sea. I'm major spring sessions and I'm overjoyed to welcome you to sunny Kuwait (3).” • This is where they first starting to get close to Iraq the first thing they see is a sea to welcome them to there new “home”. Its bright and hot over in Kuwait . Not to much of a fun place to be in.
“Back to Baghdad. You have to go through a maze of cement barriers to come into the main areas, and a private engineering company was putting fences around the place (119).” • Back to Baghdad they go in to the dangerous borders only having cement barriers to protect you before you go into the city. Trying to maneuver your way in and out of a cement maze.
“I cant tell you where we are right now, but its less than a hundred miles from the Iraq border (1).” • There not completely sure where they are but they know there close to the Iraq border as some men wait anxiously and some men act scared of coming through here. They feel lost but yet with there unrelated brothers.
“Its funny, but as much as guys talk about not wanting to be in a danger zone, I think we really do want it (25).” • This is in a first person Narrative so you can understand on how he feels and how he thinks towards the other men. This is first person narrative for using the word I.
“I don’t want to think about shooting somebody and seeing there life… seeing their life twitch and jerk away from them (156).” • The narrator those not want to kill a soul even though he knows he will have to for the job he had chosen he finds it horrible to watch someone life go so quick from a bullet and watching them die.
“We reached Ba’qubah at 1230 and I remembered that I had packed water but nothing to eat (110).” • Often the first person narrator tell about facts because he knows he those not like what he is doing and talks about facts so he those not have to express feelings.
