Addiction:choice or Disease? By: Damien Palmer
People in my family have struggled with being addicts, which has always made me question if it’s a choice or a disease? WHY ADDICTION?
It’s a disease.. • Author Alan Leshner, (Addiction is A brain disease) believes that being an addict is a disease because of the impact the drugs make on a persons brain. Leshner explains how the brains motivational control circuits are hijacked by drugs, causing the brain to think that the drugs are it’s sole priority. Leshner believes that persistent drug users ultimately change the structure of their brain and the ways It functions causing it to be a brain disease and not in their control.
WHAT DO I THINK? I have always believed addiction was purely a choice. But, it was actually really interesting to read about the different case studies out there that support addiction being a disease, I never would have thought it was anything close to being a disease. My opinion on this matter hasn’t changed but it is nice to know some knowledge for both sides of this argument. Having dealt with addiction in my family I have seen that beating an addiction can only happen If the person who is addicted wants to stop, there is not a formula or cure out there that can make someone stop, they have to want to quit on their own will.
