Color as a key design element • Most important and personal aspect of fashion • Color catches the eye first – clothing choices are usually made based on it • The apparel industry likes to stress colors and combinations as “new” when they are not • Colors are pushed in a marketing manner, so clothing is purchased • Designers will give colors interesting and unique names to catch the consumer – Ruby red

Color Terms in review - revisited dimensions Color wheel • Hue – basic name • Value – lightness or darkness • Tint – add white • Shade – add black • Intensity – brightness or dullness • neutrals • Primary, secondary, intermediate • Warm (fire) – cool (ice) • Schemes – (harmonies) • Monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split-complimentary, triad, accented neutral

Color Tricks (form=body) • Dark, cool, and dull colors = form seems smaller • Black, navy, dark blue-violet, charcoal, chocolate, dark green = slimming form • Light, warm, bright colors = form seems larger • Color placement can manipulate the viewer’s perception of the form • What do you think a one-color outfit does to the form? • Makes it appear thinner
