Our goal is… Most of the Brazilian students wants to achieve English for exams, generally (not to say ALL) written ones. Therefore, our goal is READING. Surely, a little of speaking doesn’t kill anyone, but all the techniques, strategies, schemes and tips will be about reading skills.
Reading techinques A nice thing to do before and along your studies is: Open up your mind. “Try to know a little of everything.” Take a look at the whole material you have on your hands. Always read carefully and calmly. Have a pencil with you and make notes. That’s the secret.
Reading techinques How safe is a car seat? Research has shown that forward-facing car seats for children aged up to four are often less safe than parents think. The Head Children have bigger heads than adults relative to their body weight. In an accident they are more vulnerable to serious head and brain injury. Bones The bones of young people are weaker, break more easily and give less protection to internal organs during a crash. They can be broken just by hitting seatbelt webbing during an accident. SKIMMING: A brief view of the text. Don’t concentrate too much on details. Put your brain in the atmosphere of the text.
Reading techinques What kind of text is it? Whom is it for? What are the main worries of the text? Can the kids’ bones be broken just hitting the seatbelt during an accident? COULD YOU ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS?
Reading techinques • Basic vocabulary: as many words you know as much of the text you can read. SCANNING: A detailed, specific and deep search for an information. • Cognate words and evidences (tips like numbers, proper names, pictures, graphics…) • Semantic association: words that you’ve seen but it’s not difficult to understand in the context.
Reading techinques John and I were coming back from Iguatemi mall. It was an awful afternoon. First we tried to watch a movie but it failed. The price of the ticket was out of my wallet. Then, we went for a coffee, as there were no seats available we spotted before a store named Magazine Luiza. They were selling TV sets below the market price. The display was telling about a sale after Christmas. Anyway, we tended home and went to the parking lot. Guess? We lost our car. After 45 minutes looking for it, guess again? Somebody robbed our car. Man, don’t you agree it was an awkward afternoon.
