Charlie Von Hoffer Professor Glenn Shiebler COMM 210.91C Why veganism will prevent the world from running out of food
Rising populations with increased demand for food and the resources needed to produce them will eventually deplete the world’s food supply. If things do not change, the world will run out of food in the not too distant future
Food demand will outweigh production • World Population is expected to increase to 9.6 billion by 2050 • Global crop production will need to double by 2050 • Higher yields can ensure this, but at the current rate, will not meet demand
"animal products cause more damage than [producing] construction minerals such as sand or cement, plastics or metals.“ Livestock raised for consumption accounts for 70% of freshwater consumption, 39% of global land use and 19% of greenhouse gas emissions Most of the cause of food shortages are linked to meat production
Since agricultural expansion should be avoided due to exacerbating global warming with deforestation and yields eventually no longer meeting demand, a reduction in meat production and consumption should be made How can this problem be solved?
With lower demand, less resources are used while reducing greenhouse gas emissions that are mainly caused by meat production Vegan means not consuming any animals or animal products (eggs, cheese, milk) Going vegan is the best way to solve the issue
A good way to start is to ease into it Avoid giving up meat “cold turkey” Start by making one meal a day vegan, than gradually increase the number of meals that are vegan Can have “meatless Monday” once a week to cut back on meat You don’t necessarily need to go vegan if cutting animal products is too much, vegetarianism will help as well! How can I go vegan?
“how do I get protein?”- beans are a good source, as well as green peas, quinoa, nuts, chick peas, tempeh, tofu B12 can be lacking in a vegan diet, but can be solved with kale or spinach Iron can be found in spinach, tofu, peanuts Calcium is in spinach, broccoli, kale, broccoli Omega-3s: walnuts, soybeans “is it expensive?”-it can be, but by cutting out meat which is normally the most expensive grocery items, substitutes and alternatives can still cost less Concerns with diet change
Healthier lifestyle- Animal fats and proteins increase risk of cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and heart disease Environment and agriculture- Reduction of meat production will lower greenhouse emissions and free up resources to go towards food for humans Benefits of veganism
