2. Why are we here? • The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires that each Title I School hold an Annual Meeting of Title I parents for the purpose of: • Informing you or your school’s participation in Title I • Explaining the requirements of Title I • Explaining your rights as parents to be involved

3. What you will learn………….. • What does it mean to be a Title I School? • What is the 1% Set-Aside for parental involvement? • What is the LEA Title I Plan? • What is the LEA Parental Involvement Plan? • What is a CIP? • What is the School – Parent Compact? • How do I request the qualifications of my child’s teacher(s)? • How will I be notified if my child is taught by a teacher who is NOT Highly Qualified? • How is the Annual Evaluation of the Parental Involvement Plan conducted? • How can I be involved in all of these things I’m learning about?

4. What does it mean to be a Title I School? Being a Title I School means receiving federal funding to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for: • Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to meet content standards outlined in the Alabama State Course of Study. • Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies • Conducting parental involvement meetings, trainings, activites • Recruiting, hiring, retaining highly qualified teachers Being a Title I School also means parental involvement and parents’ rights.

5. What is the 1% set-aside and how are parents involved? • Any LEA with Title I allocation exceeding $500,000 is required by law to set aside 1% of its Title I allocation for parental involvement. • Of that 1%, 5% may be reserved for system-wide initiatives related to parental involvement. The remaining 95% must be allocated to all Title I schools in the LEA. Each Title I school receives its portion of the 95% to implement school-level parental involvement. • You, as parents, have the right to be involved in how this money is spent. • Asbury’s allocation for parental involvement is $4,852.50.

6. What is the LEA Title I Plan? This plan outlines how the Marshall County School district will use Title I funds throughout the school system. It is developed and revised each year using standardized test results and various types of data to determine needs for each school throughout the system. Parents from each school are invited to participate by joining the school’s parent advisory committee. Input from all parents is welcome.

7. What is the Parental Involvement Plan? The plan that addresses how to implement the parental involvements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This plan is located in the Continuous Improvement Plan (Part VI). Once developed, this plan will be posted on the school web page. Hard copies are available in the main office and the school libraries. This plan is revised annually through the school leadership team. Ways to be involved: • Join PTA, parent involvement committee, CIP parent representative • Speak to your child’s teacher, send recommendations in writing to the school office

8. Parental Involvement Funds The allocated amount, $4,852.50, will be used in the following ways: • To provide monthly meetings for parents to find out about existing programs and initiatives taking place at Asbury (AMSTI, ARI, Mentoring, Flex Schedule, Credit Recovery, Distance Learning, Goal Setting, etc.) All parents are encouraged to attend these meetings to provide their input into monthly meetings.

9. What is a CIP? The CIP is the school’s continuous improvement plan which includes: • A needs assessment and summary of data • Goals and strategies to address academic needs of students • Professional development needs • Coordination of resources/comprehensive budget • The Parental Involvement Plan Parents are members of the school leadership team, which meets each month to focus on needs tied to meeting the developed goals for the school each year. Parents are encouraged to attend, and input from all stakeholders is valuable in meeting school needs and goals.

10. What is the School-Parent Compact? • The compact is a commitment from the school, the parent/guardian, and the student to share in the responsibility for improved academic achievement. • You, as parents, have the right to be involved in the development of the School-Parent Compact. The leadership team revises the compact annually. All stakeholders have input for revisions to be made. • This form is sent home on the first day of school along with the student handbook.

The following is an outline of some of the ways you and the school staff can build and maintain a partnership to share the responsibility for supporting your child’s learning. • Student Role • It is important that I work to the best of my ability. I know that being well educated is the key to my future. Therefore, I will strive to do the following: • Pay attention and ask for help when needed. • Attend school regularly and work hard to do my best. • Be responsible for my own behavior and respect other students and adults. • Believe in myself and my learning ability. • Complete my homework and get adequate rest. • Signature_____________________________________________Date________________ • Parent Role • I realize that my child’s school years are very important. I also understand that participation in my child’s education will help his/her achievement and attitude. Therefore, I will do my best to help my child in the following ways: • Read with my child and let my child read to me. • Be responsible for my child’s punctuality and school attendance. • Have high expectations for my child and monitor homework and progress. • Help my child learn to resolve conflicts in positive ways and support the school discipline policy. • Maintain clear and frequent communication with school and attend parent conferences. • Signature_____________________________________________Date________________ • Teacher Role • I understand the importance of student achievement and my role as a teacher. Therefore, I agree to carry out the following responsibilities to do the best of my ability. • Provide a high quality curriculum that enables the child to meet the state performance standards. • Notify parents by providing information about progress, behavior, and grades. • Stay aware of the needs of my students and respect their learning styles. • Signature_____________________________________________Date________________ • Administrator’s Responsibility: • Provide high quality curriculum and learning materials • Provide you with assistance in understanding academic achievement standards and assessments and how to monitor your child’s progress • Provide opportunities for ongoing communication between you and teachers through, at a minimum: • Annual parent-teacher Frequent reports regarding your child’s progress, and • Opportunities to talk with staff, to volunteer in class, and to observe classroom activities. • Signature____________________________________________Date___________________ • Please review this School-Parent Compact with your child. 12. How do I request the qualifications of my child’s teacher? • Forms are sent home annually for parents to request teacher qualifications (HQ). • These forms will be sent home with progress reports on Friday, Sept. 10.

13. How will I be notified if my child is taught by a teacher who is not Highly Qualified? • Asbury currently has 65 certified staff members. Two of our current staff members do not meet the guidelines of the Alabama State Dept. of Education for Highly Qualified status. These 2 faculty members are currently working on completion of the final stages of this process. • A notification letter of faculty members not HQ by the Alabama State Dept. of Education must be sent to all parents by 10/01/10.

14. How is the evaluation of the LEA Parental Involvement Plan conducted? Evaluation requirements: • Conduct annually with parents • Analyze content and effectiveness of the current plan • Identify barriers to parental involvement • Data may include surveys, focus groups, and parent advisory committees
